In a new study, researchers have found that vitamin D deficiency is an independent risk factor for increased post-operative pain in postmenopausal women undergoing total knee arthroplasty.
For postmenopausal women with vitamin D deficiency, complete replacement of the knee joint with vitamin D may be more painful. This is a serious problem worldwide.
It is estimated that 60% of adults lack vitamins to supplement
bones. The lack of estrogen in perimenopausal women relates to vitamin D, lack of sunlight. This also leads
to vitamin D deficiency in postmenopausal women.
In this new study, the researchers hope to study the effect of
vitamin D levels on the functional outcomes and risk factors for moderate to
severe pain in postmenopausal women after knee replacement. Advanced
non-surgical knee osteoarthritis treatment is no longer effective. Eventhough
the procedure is safe, women/s experience postoperative pain. Earlier studies
have attempted to determine the factors which influence the degree of pain experienced
by women after knee replacement.
These studies show that postmenopausal status and low estrogen
levels are related to joint discoloration, mainly in women between the ages of
50 and 59.
This new study highlights a link between vitamin D deficiency and
an increased risk of postoperative pain. smoking and high body mass index (BMI)
are independent risk factors for moderate to severe pain after knee
arthroplasty.
The new study also found that the prevalence of vitamin D
deficiency in programmed postmenopausal women is high (67.3%). The results of
these studies are consistent with previous studies, which showed that vitamin D
deficiency is associated with the development of osteoarthritis, muscle cramps,
bone pain, difficulty walking, decreased bone mineral density, and fractures.
A study shows that higher body mass index, smoking, and vitamin D
deficiency are independent risk factors for moderate to severe postoperative
pain in postmenopausal women after knee arthroplasty.
Moreover patients with preoperative vitamin D deficiency have poor
functional outcomes.
